Cyberpunk 2077: For fans of Polish video game developers CD Projekt RED, the brainiacs behind giving The Witcher series a worthy gaming franchise, Cyberpunk 2077 may seem like uncharted territory. But there’s not much different in the two, except for the story, setting, source material, and, well, a lot of the basics. What we are trying to get at here is that we fully expect the upcoming game to be as story-oriented and mind-boggling as everything they have given us so far. And while we haven’t been shown a lot, our expectations from Cyberpunk 2077 have hit the roof. Here’s everything we know so far.
Cyberpunk 2077 Release Date
Of all the questions we have on our minds, this one has to be the sketchiest territory. CD Projekt started teasing a brand new futuristic RPG way back in 2012. Shortly after coming to light about the recruitment process, we came to know that the new game was, indeed, Cyberpunk 2077. Still, at that point, we knew nothing about what to expect. We can’t say that the guesses of those acquainted with Mike Pondsmith’s 1988 RPG were much better than ours, but at the time, the company had already delivered two blockbuster video games. While they had nothing to do with cyberpunk themes, we could only imagine that a triple-A scale CD Projekt production would be nothing short of awesome.
The title reveal followed through in October, which suggested the time setting of the new game, while the incredibly detailed first teaser trailer came the next year. Since then, we have been offered a few glimpses into CD Projekt’s visions with the title in the works, but a few notable hints apart (more on that later), the creators haven’t been very forthcoming about what we are going to see.
Coming to the question of the moment, the Cyberpunk 2077 release date is still a mystery. For a game that has been in development for at least 5 years, we have seen awfully little of it, and the fact that the developers have stuck to the COMING: WHEN IT’S READY motto that was brazenly displayed at the end of the 2013 trailer so meticulously has led some to wonder if all has been going well. As we have seen before, it never has been a good idea to reveal games too early before their approximate time. However, a good reason why the first trailer was launched so early was to support the recruitment process and fetch new talent.
We do have an inkling about when we may expect to see it, and that being sometime between 2017 to 2021. The company apparently has two games lined up for release between this sizeable window, and the first one to come out will be Cyberpunk 2077, it has been said. From the timeline provided, it is clear that CD Projekt is not succumbing to the pressure of fan demands and instead generously indulging in all the genius that they are known to employ while building a game.
More specific reports suggest that the game would be out by June 2019, which is how long the project is supposed to last. It looks like we won’t get a look at gameplay and other details before we’re well into 2018. And considering the kind of ambition the devs are displaying with this project, it’s going to be one helluva wait.
Cyberpunk 2077 Gameplay
Considering all the reasons listed above, it is difficult to know how the new game will look like when it finally reached completion. The only clue to go by here is the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer, which looks awesome by the way. CD Projekt RED has said that the details achieved in the trailer is what they’re trying to go for with the full game, which we can imagine is nothing short of a daunting task. Truth be told, w have never had a game that looks and feels so detailed. But if anyone can do it, the developers of The Witcher series will be the ones to light the way.
The freedom, and the risk, is aplenty with the upcoming project, especially considering the fact that it’s a standalone one. We already know that a huge chunk of the studio’s talent is involved, including some notable The Witcher staff, which has been a separate entity in the studio. So while it’s a shame that we are so short on details about the new game, we know that it will be big. There are a few significant pieces of news though, and we’ll begin with that.
Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer Is A Thing
Anyone who is familiar with the works of the developer knows that multiplayer has not been on the list of gameplay properties with any of their former titles. Even The Witcher 3’s DLCs only featured single-player stories and gameplay, which is why you may be surprised if you’re new to this information. Back in 2013, Adam Badowski (MD, CDPR) had this to say to Eurogamer’s Robert Purchese: “[Cyberpunk 2077] will be a story-based RPG experience with amazing single-player playthroughs, but we’re going to add multiplayer features.” This has also been highlighted in reports that detail the grant CDPR has applied for.
Now, this was way before The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt came out, giving rise to speculations that the latter would come with multiplayer elements too. But as we all know, they have not deviated from the “story-based RPG experience with amazing single-player playthroughs” path, not even in any of the DLC.
Okay, so what will the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer be like? According to GamePressure, the company has applied to the Polish government for funds that will go into making a Seamless Multiplayer, which is a “complex technology for making unique multiplayer gameplay mechanics, including the ability to search out for opponents, manage game session, replicate objects, as well as support for different game modes along with a unique set of dedicated tools.”
The Focus Is On The Environment
Cyberpunk 2077 will arrive with a vast open world in the fictional location of Night City, set in, you guessed it, the year 2077. The futuristic locale means that we’re going to see some crazy weapons and other stuff, some of which we have already seen in the trailer. Night City is supposed to be a once-thriving city of 5 million inhabitants located on the west coast of the USA, which, following a socio-economic collapse, has resorted to the power of megacorps to remain standing. This has essentially made the people of the city a slave to the will of these corporations, which have devised certain devious means to ensure total control- such as drugs and implants.
If you thought that The Witcher 3’s world was the biggest and baddest you had ever seen from CD Projekt, think again. The world of Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be a lot bigger than every game they have done in the past, including The Witcher 3. In fact, a recent insider leak claims it will be nearly four times as big as Wild Hunt, with the maps featuring the 2015 game’s seasonal system for generating massive scales. Areas on the map will not be immune to destruction, and if you end up laying waste to a certain location, you may find it under reconstruction when you revisit it at a later time.
The massive scale that the devs are aiming for can be corroborated by the report mentioned earlier, which talks about a system called City Creation. This will be another complex technology to build a “huge living city, playable in real time, which (the technology) is based on rules, AI, and automation, as well as supports innovative processes and tools for making top-notch open-world games.”
Characters
As to who you will play as, defining your Cyberpunk 2077 character will be entirely up to you. In the previously mentioned interview with Eurogamer, Badowski said that the approach to character will be very different from what they had in The Witcher 3. There will be different character classes too, and Pondsmith confirmed earlier this year, that all the ones from the board game will make a return- with a twist, of course.
Cyberpunk 2077 Story
Here is what we have gathered: Cyberpunk 2077 is set during a time in the future when evil megacorps will do anything to consolidate power. The society has taken a turn towards the terrible as people seek to enhance themselves with cyber-based implants that seem to make them more fitted to the society. However, it appears that these methods also have significant risks associated. There’s also the braindance, which allows the downtrodden some amount of relief by allowing them to dabble in the lives of others by experiencing their lives firsthand. However, it seems that users have no choice over which part of a person’s life they wish to experience, leaving them totally at the mercy of the drug. As long as the effects of the drugs last, they may feel as if they were the life of the party, or if they’re unlucky, a severely bad phase, depending on whose life and which part of that they get to experience. The lead character is not going to be one from the higher classes, and the player will have to make their way up. Crawling through the filth of Night City, it seems, is inevitable, both literally, and metaphorically.
Cyberpunk 2077 Trailer
Not much to show here besides the 2013 reveal trailer. But if you haven’t seen it yet, let us assure you that it’s a treat for all your darkest sci-fi fantasies. Check it out below.
We don’t quite know what it all means, and how the ending scene fits into what’s shown at first. Besides the hellish representation of times yet unseen, what blows us away is the detail on this one. Check out the IGN exclusive breakdown below that has definitely helped us appreciate the trailer on a deeper level.
Which Platforms Are Confirmed?
The only platform that has been confirmed for Cyberpunk 2077 without a shred of doubt is the Windows PC, but chances are of Xbox and PS4 versions are highly likely. Adam Badowski told Eurogamer that he envisioned Cyberpunk 2077 as a game that reaches a wider audience base, and leaving console users out of the equation does not justify that aim. In fact, the report mentions that the game will indeed come to next-gen consoles, but CD Projekt has not specified what these will be. It may be safe to assume that the game will come to the Xbox One and PS4, but support for Xbox One X and the PS4 Pro, and whatever else Sony has plans to reveal in the future, is a big possibility.
Wrap Up
We still have a lot to learn about the next offering from the creators of Wild Hunt, but considering that they’re currently focusing on Gwent means there will be some waiting to do. Cyberpunk 2077 has also been absent from all the major gaming events of 2017, leaving us to speculate that it won’t be made public (well, any more than what it has been already) before E3 2018. Thankfully, though, we imagine updates- both official and unofficial, will keep us busy in the meantime. Here’s looking to that.
